Can I electronically file a state tax return without a federal tax return?

Yes, in most cases you may efile your state tax return separately. You should enter both your federal and state tax information and then calculate the return. For all states, except AR, HI, OK and OR, you can then file your state tax return independently.

Please Note: You can choose to electronically file just your federal tax return.

Why isn't my state supported?

Our program supports tax preparation for all states that have income tax, and the District of Columbia.

Some states do not have individual income tax on earned income. They are:

  • Alaska
  • Nevada
  • South Dakota
  • Texas
  • Washington
  • Wyoming

What states have Community Property laws?

"Community Property" refers to a system governing spousal ownership of property and income in the following states. Residents of these states cannot file electronically if they are married and filing separately.

The IRS has accepted my return, but why haven't I heard back from my state?

The states will usually be a few days behind the federal since most states receive your information from the IRS only after the IRS has accepted the return.

I only want to file my federal tax return electronically. How do I do this?

To electronically file the federal tax return without the state, you must answer No to the question, "Do you want to file your state tax return electronically (if applicable)?" This question is located on the Filing Options page which is the first step on the Steps to File page.
